The heat flow for the full bosonic string
We study harmonic maps from surfaces coupled to a scalar and a two-form potential, which arise as critical points of the action of the full bosonic string. We investigate several analytic and geometric properties of these maps and prove an existence result by the heat-flow method.
Lorentzian length spaces
We introduce an analogue of the theory of length spaces into the setting of Lorentzian geometry and causality theory. The rôle of the metric is taken over by the time separation function, in terms of which all basic notions are formulated. In this way, we recover many fundamental results in greater generality, while at the same time clarifying the minimal requirements for and the interdependence of the basic building blocks of the theory. A main focus of this work is the introduction of synthetic curvature bounds, akin to the theory of Alexandrov and CAT()-spaces, based on triangle comparison. Applications include Lorentzian manifolds with metrics of low regularity, closed cone structures, and certain approaches to quantum gravity.
Volume comparison for -metrics
The aim of this paper is to generalize certain volume comparison theorems (Bishop-Gromov and a recent result of Treude and Grant, Ann Global Anal Geom, 43:233-251, 2013) for smooth Riemannian or Lorentzian manifolds to metrics that are only (differentiable with Lipschitz continuous derivatives). In particular we establish (using approximation methods) a volume monotonicity result for the evolution of a compact subset of a spacelike, acausal, future causally complete (i.e., the intersection of any past causal cone with the hypersurface is relatively compact) hypersurface with an upper bound on the mean curvature in a globally hyperbolic spacetime with a -metric with a lower bound on the timelike Ricci curvature, provided all timelike geodesics starting in this compact set exist long enough. As an intermediate step, we also show that the cut locus of such a hypersurface still has measure zero in this regularity-generalizing the well-known result for smooth metrics. To show that these volume comparison results have some very nice applications, we then give a proof of Myers' theorem, of a simple singularity theorem for globally hyperbolic spacetimes, and of Hawking's singularity theorem directly in this regularity.
Inextendibility of spacetimes and Lorentzian length spaces
We study the low-regularity (in-)extendibility of spacetimes within the synthetic-geometric framework of Lorentzian length spaces developed in Kunzinger and Sämann (Ann Glob Anal Geom 54(3):399-447, 2018). To this end, we introduce appropriate notions of geodesics and timelike geodesic completeness and prove a general inextendibility result. Our results shed new light on recent analytic work in this direction and, for the first time, relate low-regularity inextendibility to (synthetic) curvature blow-up.

Transformations and singularities of polarized curves
We study the limiting behaviour of Darboux and Calapso transforms of polarized curves in the conformal -dimensional sphere when the polarization has a pole of first or second order at some point. We prove that for a pole of first order, as the singularity is approached, all Darboux transforms converge to the original curve and all Calapso transforms converge. For a pole of second order, a generic Darboux transform converges to the original curve while a Calapso transform has a limit point or a limit circle, depending on the value of the transformation parameter. In particular, our results apply to Darboux and Calapso transforms of isothermic surfaces when a singular umbilic with index or 1 is approached along a curvature line.
Nonlinear flag manifolds as coadjoint orbits
A nonlinear flag is a finite sequence of nested closed submanifolds. We study the geometry of Fréchet manifolds of nonlinear flags, in this way generalizing the nonlinear Grassmannians. As an application, we describe a class of coadjoint orbits of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms that consist of nested symplectic submanifolds, i.e., symplectic nonlinear flags.
Existence, uniqueness and regularity of the projection onto differentiable manifolds
We investigate the maximal open domain on which the orthogonal projection map onto a subset can be defined and study essential properties of . We prove that if is a submanifold of satisfying a Lipschitz condition on the tangent spaces, then can be described by a lower semi-continuous function, named . We show that this frontier function is continuous if is or if the topological skeleton of is closed and we provide an example showing that the frontier function need not be continuous in general. We demonstrate that, for a -submanifold with , the projection map is on , and we obtain a differentiation formula for the projection map which is used to discuss boundedness of its higher order differentials on tubular neighborhoods. A sufficient condition for the inclusion is that is a submanifold whose tangent spaces satisfy a local Lipschitz condition. We prove in a new way that this condition is also necessary. More precisely, if is a topological submanifold with , then must be and its tangent spaces satisfy the same local Lipschitz condition. A final section is devoted to highlighting some relations between and the topological skeleton of .
Graded hypoellipticity of BGG sequences
This article studies hypoellipticity on general filtered manifolds. We extend the Rockland criterion to a pseudodifferential calculus on filtered manifolds, construct a parametrix and describe its precise analytic structure. We use this result to study Rockland sequences, a notion generalizing elliptic sequences to filtered manifolds. The main application that we present is to the analysis of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) sequences over regular parabolic geometries. We do this by generalizing the BGG machinery to more general filtered manifolds (in a non-canonical way) and show that the generalized BGG sequences are Rockland in a graded sense.
Modular geodesics and wedge domains in non-compactly causal symmetric spaces
We continue our investigation of the interplay between causal structures on symmetric spaces and geometric aspects of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory. We adopt the perspective that the geometric implementation of the modular group is given by the flow generated by an Euler element of the Lie algebra (an element defining a 3-grading). Since any Euler element of a semisimple Lie algebra specifies a canonical non-compactly causal symmetric space , we turn in this paper to the geometry of this flow. Our main results concern the positivity region of the flow (the corresponding wedge region): If has trivial center, then is connected, it coincides with the so-called observer domain, specified by a trajectory of the modular flow which at the same time is a causal geodesic. It can also be characterized in terms of a geometric KMS condition, and it has a natural structure of an equivariant fiber bundle over a Riemannian symmetric space that exhibits it as a real form of the crown domain of /. Among the tools that we need for these results are two observations of independent interest: a polar decomposition of the positivity domain and a convexity theorem for -translates of open -orbits in the minimal flag manifold specified by the 3-grading.
