Factors associated with dementia attitudes in an adolescent cohort: Structural Equation Modelling

Dementia-related stigma is a key barrier to people living well with dementia, leading to social isolation and poor well-being. Adolescents represent an under-researched group that will become future carers and healthcare workers for the estimated 83.2 million people who will be living with dementia by 2030. Understanding the factors involved in dementia attitude formation in adolescents is useful for the development of evidence-based anti-stigma initiatives. This study aims to identify predictors of dementia attitudes in adolescents.
The impact of symptom stability on time frame and recall reliability in CFS

This study is an investigation of the potential impact of perceived symptom stability on the recall reliability of symptom severity and frequency as reported by individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Symptoms were recalled using three different recall timeframes (the past week, the past month, and the past six months) and at two assessment points (with one week in between each assessment).
Medication Adherence in HIV-Positive African Americans: The Roles of Age, Health Beliefs, and Sensation Seeking

We examined how two critical constructs, health beliefs and sensation seeking, influence combination antiretroviral therapy adherence in HIV+ African Americans, and whether these factors mediate the association between age and adherence. Two-hundred-and-eighty-six HIV+ African Americans participated in this observational study. Path analyses revealed that higher levels of a specific health belief, perceived utility of treatment, and lower levels of a sensation-seeking component, Thrill and Adventure Seeking, directly predicted optimal adherence. The influence of age on adherence was partially mediated by lower Thrill and Adventure Seeking levels. Depression predicted adherence via perceived utility of treatment and Thrill and Adventure Seeking, whereas current substance abuse and dependence did via Thrill and Adventure Seeking. Poorer neurocognitive function had a direct, adverse effect on adherence. Our findings suggest that supporting the development of more positive perceptions about HIV treatment utility may help increase medication adherence among African Americans. This may be particularly relevant for those with higher levels of depression symptoms, which was directly associated with negative perceptions about treatment. Additionally, clinicians can assess sensation-seeking tendencies to help identify HIV+ African Americans at risk for suboptimal adherence. Compensatory strategies for medication management may help improve adherence among HIV+ individuals with poorer neurocognitive function.
The influence of political candidates' facial appearance on older and younger adults' voting choices and actual electoral success

Younger adults (YA) judgments of political candidates' competence from facial appearance accurately predict electoral success. Whether this is true for older adults (OA) has not been investigated despite the fact that OA are more likely to vote than YA and may respond differently to particular facial qualities. We examined whether OA and YA ratings of competence, trustworthiness, attractiveness, and babyfaceness of opposing candidates in US Senate elections independently predicted their own vote choices and actual election outcomes. OA and YA ratings of attractiveness, competence, and trustworthiness positively predicted their choices, but the effect of competence was weaker for OA. Babyfaceness negatively predicted OA, but not YA, choices. OA and YA competence ratings equally predicted the actual election winners, while OA, but not YA, attractiveness ratings did so. Trustworthy and babyface ratings did not predict actual winners. These findings have implications for understanding age differences in candidate preferences and the prediction of election outcomes.
Mapping spontaneous facial expression in people with Parkinson's disease: A multiple case study design

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience a decrease in their facial expressivity, but little is known about how the coordinated movements across regions of the face are impaired in PD. The face has neurologically independent regions that coordinate to articulate distinct social meanings that others perceive as gestalt expressions, and so understanding how different regions of the face are affected is important. Using the Facial Action Coding System, this study comprehensively measured spontaneous facial expression across 600 frames for a multiple case study of people with PD who were rated as having varying degrees of facial expression deficits, and created correlation matrices for frequency and intensity of produced muscle activations across different areas of the face. Data visualization techniques were used to create temporal and correlational mappings of muscle action in the face at different degrees of facial expressivity. Results showed that as severity of facial expression deficit increased, there was a decrease in number, duration, intensity, and coactivation of facial muscle action. This understanding of how regions of the parkinsonian face move independently and in conjunction with other regions will provide a new focus for future research aiming to model how facial expression in PD relates to disease progression, stigma, and quality of life.
Examining the Relationship between Psychological Functioning, Childhood Trauma, and Types of Perceived Coercion Among Drug Court Enrollees: Results from A Pilot Study

Drug court interventions produce positive results-especially among mandated populations. Many criminal justice-involved persons, including drug court enrollees, have cooccurring substance abuse and childhood trauma disorders associated with psychological dysfunction. Given the coercive nature of mandated drug court treatment, it is important to understand whether childhood trauma and psychological functioning influence perceived coercion to enter treatment.
Thinking aloud during idea generating and planning before written translation: Developmental changes from ages 10 to 12 in expressing and defending opinions

This interdisciplinary research, drawing on cognitive psychology and linguistics, extended to middle childhood past research during early childhood or adulthood on thinking aloud prior to written composing. In year 5 of a longitudinal study of typical writing, when cohort 1 was in grade 5 ( = 110 ten year-olds) and cohort 2 in grade 7 ( = 97 twelve year-olds), a cross-sectional study was conducted. Children were first asked to think aloud while they generated ideas and second while they planned their essays to express and defend their opinions on a controversial topic in the region of the United States where they lived. Third, they wrote their essays. Their think-aloud protocols were audio-recorded and later transcribed into writing for analysis. The authors developed and applied rating scales for quality of idea generating and planning in the written transcriptions and quality of opinion expression, opinion defense, organization, and content in the essays children wrote after thinking aloud; total number of words in essays was also counted. Seventh graders scored significantly higher than fifth graders on quality of idea generation but not planning, and higher on all variables rated for quality in the written essays including length. Quality of expressing opinions and defending opinions were uncorrelated in grade 5, but moderately correlated in grade 7. Whether idea generating or planning quality explained unique variance in essays varied with coded written essay variables and grade. Educational applications of results for assessment, assessment-instruction links, instruction in social studies, and theory of mind in persuasive essay writing are discussed.
Convergent and discriminant validity of the ImPACT with traditional neuropsychological measures

Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive sequelae secondary to sports concussion is limited by lengthy administration times and lack of readily available neuropsychologists. Brief computerized test batteries are now under development to address this, but the validity of these measures is not yet established. The validity of one such computerized test battery, the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT), was administered to 93 healthy NCAA Division I athletes, aged 18-24, along with a battery of traditional, well-described neuropsychological tests. Convergent and discriminant validity between the ImPACT and traditional measures was investigated using multitrait-multimethod matrix (MTMM) analysis. As an example, the ImPACT Visual Motor Speed composite demonstrated reasonably good convergent validity secondary to moderate correlations with traditional measures of processing speed, but it demonstrated relatively poor discriminant validity as it significantly correlated with the Reaction Time composite score. MTMM results were variable across ImPACT composites and data for each are presented. The ImPACT composite's validity was further investigated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Six principal components were termed processing speed, visual memory, verbal memory, attention & working memory, and verbal fluency, based upon traditional test loadings, and a sixth loaded only on the ImPACT Reaction Time composite. EFA indicated content validity of moderate strength for the Visual Motor Speed and Visual Memory composites, but revealed problems with specificity for the other composites. Based upon the present findings, validity problems render the interpretability of the ImPACT composites somewhat questionable, and more research is necessary prior to using the ImPACT for assessment of clinical populations.
Brain's functional network clustering coefficient changes in response to instruction (RTI) in students with and without reading disabilities: Multi-leveled reading brain's RTI

In students in grades 4 to 9 (22 males, 20 females), two reading disability groups-dyslexia ( = 20) or oral and written language learning disability (OWL LD) ( = 6)-were compared to each other and two kinds of control groups-typical readers ( = 6) or dysgraphia ( = 10) on word reading/spelling skills and fMRI imaging before and after completing 18 computerized reading lessons. Mixed ANOVAs showed significant time effects on repeated measures within participants and between groups effects on three behavioral markers of reading disabilities-word reading/spelling: All groups improved on the three behavioral measures, but those without disabilities remained higher than those with reading disabilities. On fMRI reading tasks, analyzed for graph theory derived clustering coefficients within a neural network involved in cognitive control functions, on a task the time × group interaction was significant in right medial cingulate; on a task the time × group interaction was significant in left superior frontal and left inferior frontal gyri; and on a task the time × group interaction was significant in right middle frontal gyrus. Three white matter-gray matter correlations became significant only after reading instruction: axial diffusivity in left superior frontal region with right inferior frontal gyrus during ; mean diffusivity in left superior corona radiata with left middle frontal gyrus during ; and mean diffusivity in left anterior corona radiata with right middle frontal gyrus during . Significance of results for behavioral and brain response to reading instruction (RTI) is discussed.
Antecedents of Purpose in Life: Evidence from A Lagged Exposure-Wide Analysis

Potential antecedents to having a sense of purpose in life remain understudied. As researchers begin contemplating purpose as a promising target of public health intervention, it is critical to identify its antecedents. Using prospective data from the Nurses' Health Study II (2009-2016; N ranged from 3,905 to 4,189), this study evaluated a wide range of potential antecedents of purpose, including: psychosocial well-being, psychological distress, employment characteristics, lifestyle, and physical health factors. In separate regression models we regressed purpose in life on each candidate antecedent. In each model, we adjusted for the prior value of purpose, prior values of all exposure variables, and various other covariates simultaneously. Bonferroni correction was used to correct for multiple testing. The results suggested that positive affect and the number of close relatives were each associated with higher purpose (e.g., β=0.14, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.17 for positive affect). Several psychological distress indicators were inversely associated with purpose, including depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, loneliness, and hopelessness (e.g., β=-0.16, 95% CI: -0.19, -0.13 for depressive symptoms). There was also some evidence suggesting that fewer close friends, living alone, and unemployment/retirement were associated with lower purpose. There was, however, little evidence that health behaviors or physical health were associated with subsequent purpose. This study extends the literature by providing longitudinal evidence with rigorous analytic methodologies, and by considering a wide range of potential antecedents of purpose including some that have seldom been examined previously.
Parenting beliefs about attunement and structure are related to observed parenting behaviours

We compared self-reported parenting beliefs about caring for infants with observed parenting behaviours during play interactions between 32 parents and their infants. We measured parenting beliefs about the value of attunement and structure in caring for infants using the Baby Care Questionnaire (BCQ) (Winstanley & Gattis, 2013; Winstanley, Sperotto, Putnick, Cherian, Bornstein & Gattis, 2014). We used a micro-coding approach to distinguish between responsive parenting behaviours (maintaining infant attention) and demanding parenting behaviours (introducing or redirecting infant attention) (Landry, Garner, Swank & Baldwin, 1996). Attunement beliefs were positively related to responsive parenting behaviours and negatively related to demanding parenting behaviours. Structure beliefs were weakly related to demanding parenting behaviours. These results are an important first step toward identifying relations between self-reported parenting beliefs about attunement and structure and observed parenting behaviours.
Cognitive testing following transient ischaemic attack: A systematic review of clinical assessment tools

Cognitive deficits are prevalent after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and result in loss of function, poorer quality of life and increased risks of dependency and mortality. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the available evidence on cognitive assessment in TIA patients to determine the prevalence of cognitive deficits, and the optimal tests for cognitive assessment. Medline, Embase, PsychINFO and CINAHL databases were searched for relevant articles. Articles were screened by title and abstract. Full-text analysis and quality assessment was performed using the National Institute of Health Tool. Data were extracted on study characteristics, prevalence of TIA deficits, and key study findings. Due to significant heterogeneity, meta-analysis was not possible. Twenty-five full-text articles met the review inclusion criteria. There was significant heterogeneity in terms of cognitive tests used, definitions of cognitive impairment and TIA, time points post-event, and analysis methods. The majority of studies used the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) ( = 23). Prevalence of cognitive impairment ranged from 2% to 100%, depending on the time-point and cognitive domain studied. The MoCA was more sensitive than the MMSE for identifying cognitive deficits. Deficits were common in executive function, attention, and language. No studies assessed diagnostic test accuracy against a reference standard diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Recommendations on cognitive testing after TIA are hampered by significant heterogeneity between studies, as well as a lack of diagnostic test accuracy studies. Future research should focus on harmonising tools, definitions, and time-points, and validating tools specifically for the TIA population.
