Effectiveness of synchronous teledentistry consultations in facilitating treatment compliance of rural pediatric patients
Shah B, McLaren SW, Feng C, Watson GE, Billings RJ and Kopycka-Kedzierawski DT
Limited access to pediatric oral health care in rural US areas is a substantial dental public health problem. In 2010, the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester, initiated a synchronous teledentistry program to enhance oral health screenings, treatment planning, and treatment completion for rural pediatric patients who reside in the Western region of New York.
Endodontic and periapical status of patients with osteoporosis: A cross-sectional study with age- and sex-matched controls
Goker Kamalı S and Turkaydın D
The aim of the authors was to evaluate the periapical and endodontic conditions of patients with osteoporosis and compare them with those of age- and sex-matched controls. The association between bisphosphonate (BiP) use and periapical and endodontic status in patients with osteoporosis was also investigated.
Emergency department use for nontraumatic dental conditions for children with special health care needs enrolled in Oregon Medicaid
Imani K, Hill CM and Chi DL
This cross-sectional study evaluated whether children with special health care needs (CSHCN) were more likely to use the emergency department (ED) for nontraumatic dental conditions (NTDCs) than children without special health care needs (SHCN). The study also examined whether the likelihood of receiving an opioid prescription after an NTDC-ED visit differed between children with and without SHCN.
Motivational interviewing at home: A community trial to improve oral health literacy and reduce morbidity in disadvantaged Chilean families
Cartes-Velásquez R and Luengo-Machuca L
Limited evidence exists regarding the effects of home-based interventions on oral health outcomes in preschool-aged children or caregivers despite the success of such interventions in other child and pregnancy health outcomes. The aim of this community trial was to assess the impact after 12 months of a home-delivered motivational interviewing (MI) intervention on oral health outcomes in disadvantaged Chilean families.

Effect of staining solutions on color and translucency stability of resin-composite computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing blocks
Zhang L, Yu Y, Li S, Yang F, Liang S and Xing W
The purpose of this study was to investigate the color difference (ΔE) and translucency changes (ΔTP) of resin-composite computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing blocks after exposure to staining solutions.
Endodontic access with different computer navigation systems in calcified root canals
García Franco C, Riad Deglow E, Montero J, Abella Sans F, Nagendrababu V, Dummer PMH, Lobo Galindo AB and Zubizarreta-Macho Á
A range of computer-aided navigation techniques to aid endodontic access cavity preparation have been developed. The aim of this study was to analyze the accuracy of access cavities prepared with the aid of computer-aided static navigation (SN), computer-aided dynamic navigation (DN), and navigation based on augmented reality (AR) compared with a conventional freehand (FH) method in extracted mandibular teeth with calcified root canal systems.
The effect of self-reported flossing behavior on cardiovascular disease events and mortality: Findings from the 2009-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys
Philip N, Tamimi F, Al-Sheebani A, Almuzafar A and Shi Z
There is increasing evidence suggesting that daily oral hygiene self-care measures may alleviate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The authors aimed to determine the influence of self-reported dental flossing behavior on the prevalence of CVD events, CVD-linked mortality, and a CVD risk marker of inflammation (ie, C-reactive protein [CRP]).

Patient and practitioner perspectives on tooth extractions without clinical justification
Broers DLM, Dubois L, de Lange J, Marie Welie JV, Brands WG, Bruers JJM and de Jongh A
Nondental factors (ie, financial, psychological, or cultural considerations) can play a role in extraction requests. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients' perspectives on extraction without a valid clinical indication align with those of practitioners.
Evidence-based approaches and considerations for nonrestorative treatments within modern caries management: Integrating science into practice
Fontana M, Gonzalez-Cabezas C and Tenuta LMA
A high level of scientific evidence supports several nonrestorative strategies for the control of caries, with the goal of reducing progression of mineral loss and arresting existing lesions. The authors provide an overview of evidence for nonrestorative caries control and considerations in the decision making for selecting nonrestorative options.

Stenlund S, Huynh J, Pau C, Chuang E, Lishman H and Patrick DM
Dentists in the United States and Canada have higher rates of prescribing broad-spectrum spectrum antibiotics than dentists in some other Western countries. The authors provide an overview of dental antibiotic prescribing trends from British Columbia, Canada.
Mental health screenings in dental settings: Feasibility and outcomes from a study by The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network
Smith TB, Berryhill MB, Culmer N, McBurnie MA, Kopycka-Kedzierawski D, Gilbert GH, Barton D and Machen C
