Beyond body image: Self-face recognition and negative self-face evaluations in women at high risk for an eating disorder
Although one's face represents a core aspect of one's physical appearance, it remains underexplored in eating disorder (ED) populations.
Anorexia Nervosa in Comorbidity With Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescence: A Specific Clinical Endophenotype?
Anorexia nervosa and borderline personality disorder are often associated and share some core elements, including emotional dysregulation and affective instability. Nevertheless, the association of these two conditions in adolescence is still little studied.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of eating disorder preventative interventions in schools
Adolescents are particularly susceptible to developing an eating disorder (ED). Therefore, schools are in a unique position to assist in the prevention of EDs for this vulnerable group. To ascertain the current evidence-base for school-based ED prevention efforts, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials that delivered a school-based ED prevention intervention and assessed the impact these interventions had on ED symptomatology.
Neuropsychological profile in young girls at high risk of developing anorexia nervosa
Previous research has shown anorexia nervosa (AN) to be associated with a specific neuropsychological profile, including set-shifting and central coherence deviances. A similar profile has been shown in adult unaffected relatives. The aim of this study was to examine whether poor set-shifting and central coherence abilities could be detected in children at high risk of developing AN.
The Thorny Issue of Atypical Anorexia Nervosa: Clinicians' Perspectives on How It Should Be Defined
Atypical Anorexia Nervosa (AAN) is an ill-defined diagnosis. Little is known about how eating disorder clinicians perceive the utility of the diagnosis, and what changes they believe would add to that utility. This qualitative study aimed to explore clinicians' perspectives on refining the DSM-5 AAN diagnosis.
Alliance processes in eating disorders with childhood maltreatment sequelae: Preliminary implications
Effective eating disorder (ED) treatments are drastically needed for patients with experiences of sustained and prolonged emotional, physical and sexual childhood maltreatment (CM) that often results in post-traumatic sequelae such as severe, complex posttraumatic stress disorder (cPTSD). EDs with comorbid cPTSD (cPTSD-ED) have protracted treatment courses and poorer prognoses.
Contemporary reflections on William Gull's case studies of anorexia nervosa, 150 years on
To analyse and compare the original four published anorexia nervosa (AN) case histories of William Gull with modern-day approaches.
Patient and carer feedback and engagement with ECHOMANTRA, a digital guided intervention for anorexia nervosa
We developed ECHOMANTRA, a digital guided intervention for patients with anorexia nervosa and their carers to provide support during transition from inpatient care to community settings. This study reports on participants' engagement with, and feedback of, ECHOMANTRA.
Bonding and parent-child quality of interaction in parents with eating disorder: A scoping review
To summarise existing evidence on bonding and parent-child quality of interaction in parents with eating disorder (ED).
Transgender and gender-diverse identity in patients with eating disorders: A national cross-sectional study
This national study aimed to estimate the prevalence of the transgender and gender-diverse identity and to assess the level of gender congruence, body dissatisfaction and quality of life among patients with eating disorders in Denmark.
The collateral effects of the COVID-19 pandemic: A gender-specific systematic review of disordered eating behaviour in the general population
The COVID-19 pandemic initiated public health measures, impacting mental health and exacerbating disordered eating behaviours (DEB). This study aims to fill gaps in understanding DEB in the general population during the pandemic, emphasising gender dynamics and the experiences of gender and/or sexual minority (SGM) individuals.
Eating disorder debut cases during COVID-19 lockdown in adults. Exploring differences in treatment outcome contrasting with pre-pandemic onset cases
Despite an increase in eating disorder (ED) cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are limited longitudinal studies exploring treatment outcomes. The aims of the present study were: (1) to compare the clinical features of patients with EDs whose onset was during the COVID-19 lockdown (pandemic cohort) against patients with EDs whose onset was prior to the pandemic (pre-pandemic cohort) and, (2) to compare therapy responses between the cohorts.
Sleep disturbances in anorexia nervosa
Sleep is crucial for physical and psychological health, and disturbances are closely linked to psychiatric disorders, making their management essential for improving treatment outcomes and preventing relapse. Although sleep disturbances are implicated in psychopathology of eating disorders, its role in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. This review aimed to characterise sleep in AN.
Purging frequency and number of purging methods as indicators of severity in bulimia nervosa: Interactive effects with binge eating episodes
In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5, severity of bulimia nervosa (BN) is defined by the frequency of purging behaviour. Previous research suggests the number of purging methods as an alternative rating. The current analysis investigated characteristics (sociodemographic and treatment-related variables, body mass index [BMI], eating disorder-specific and general psychopathology) of persons with BN as a function of purging frequency and number of purging methods in order to examine which approach might be better suited for indicating severity of BN.
Impairments in personality functioning in adolescents with anorexia nervosa
Impairments in personality functioning (PF) according to the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) may affect anorexia nervosa (AN) and its treatment. However, PF impairments in adolescents with AN have not been studied. This case-control study analysed PF impairments in adolescent inpatients suffering from AN compared to a clinical control group (CC) and investigated the relationship of PF with AN severity.
Delving into the role of reward and punishment sensitivity in anorexia nervosa: Punishment responsivity as the only predictor of eating disorder symptom persistence in adolescents
This study differentiated between self-reported punishment responsivity (PR) and motivation to avoid punishment (MP) and examined their relationship with anorexia nervosa (AN) and its course in a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal approach. We explored whether inconsistent findings regarding reward sensitivity may be explained by previous research not differentiating between reward responsivity (RR) and motivation to approach reward (MR).
Severity levels of anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa in a Korean cohort
Despite its potential for informing tailored treatments, the severity of eating disorders (EDs) lacks clear conceptualisation. The present retrospective cohort study examined the clinical validity and utility of severity specifiers for anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN in a Korean population.
The structure of motivation: Assessing readiness to change dimensions and their predictive value with the network validation of the Italian version of the Anorexia Nervosa Stages of Change Questionnarie
Motivation to change is an important predictor for treatment outcomes in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), however, the existence and clinical relevance of distinct motivational dimensions are understudied. This study aimed to structurally validate the AN Stage of Change Questionnaire (ANSOCQ) in the Italian adult AN population to identify separate motivational dimensions and their association with clinical variables and outcomes.
A network analysis of eating disorder, PTSD, major depression, state-trait anxiety, and quality of life measures in eating disorder patients treated in residential care
The network approach in the eating disorder (ED) field has confirmed important links between EDs and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, studies including comorbid symptoms are scarce, which limits our understanding of potentially important connections. We hypothesised that anxiety, depression and poor quality of life (QOL) would provide a more complete picture of central, maintaining factors.
Affect and disordered eating behaviours in women's daily lives: The comparative explanatory roles of distinct momentary emotion dysregulation dimensions
The present study aimed to examine: (a) whether distinct momentary emotion dysregulation dimensions differentially mediated momentary associations between affect and disordered eating behaviours (DEBs) in the natural environment; (b) whether these associations differed based on affect, emotion dysregulation, and DEB type.
The predictive value of emotion regulation difficulties and negative mood on short and long-term treatment outcomes in an online guided self-help programme for adults with binge-eating disorder
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) online guided self-help programs represent efficacious and accessible treatment options for adults with binge-eating disorder (BED), but research on predictors of treatment outcome is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of emotion regulation difficulties relative to that of negative mood on short- and longer-term treatment outcomes in an online guided self-help programme for BED above and beyond other predictors (age, sex, baseline BED severity).
