Impact of preoperative nutritional status on morbidity and mortality in elderly patients undergoing subdural hematoma evacuation: the role of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index
Nutritional status has been shown to impact patient outcomes across several neurosurgical procedures. However, few prior studies have assessed associations between preoperative nutritional status and outcomes in elderly patients undergoing subdural hematoma evacuations. The aim of this study was to identify associations between preoperative nutritional status and short-term outcomes in patients aged 65 years and older undergoing subdural hematoma evacuation.
Safety of early chemoprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis. A military traumatic brain injury initiative study
There is continuing uncertainty about the safety of early chemoprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of this paper was to 1) calculate the risk of progression of posttraumatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) after VTE chemoprophylaxis, and 2) compare the probability of ICH progression in early versus late VTE prophylaxis.
Neurosurgery in Australia's Top End: the lifesaving advantages of developing sustainable neurosurgical care in rural and remote regions
The authors' goal was to perform a retrospective audit of all emergency cranial neurosurgery performed at the Royal Darwin Hospital in the first 5 years of the unit and to compile their data in a similar fashion to an earlier study titled "Emergency Neurosurgery in Darwin: Still the Generalist Surgeons' Responsibility," which was published in 2015.
Chronological characterization of hearing preservation after radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma: a comprehensive meta-analysis
Hearing outcomes following Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for vestibular schwannoma (VS) are multifactorial and poorly characterized in prior literature. In this study the authors evaluated hearing outcomes chronologically to identify prognostic factors of serviceable hearing preservation (HP) rates following GKRS for VS.

Preoperative predictors of biochemical remission in somatotroph adenoma resections: a single-institution retrospective review
There is persistent debate in the literature surrounding the true predictors of biochemical remission after resection of somatotroph adenoma. A multimodal analysis of a large number of patients is needed to better understand which patients may be at higher or lower risk for remission failure after surgery.
Primary and salvage radiosurgery for neurofibromatosis type 2-associated meningiomas
The optimal management of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-associated meningiomas must be personalized case by case. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is one option for patients with one or multiple intracranial meningiomas associated with the NF2 mutation. In this study, the authors evaluated their single-institution experience of SRS treatment for NF2-associated meningiomas.

Multinuclear thalamic targeting with human stereotactic electroencephalography: surgical technique and nuances
The authors recently demonstrated the utility of a novel multinuclear thalamic stereotactic electroencephalography (sEEG) approach to identify personalized seizure propagation networks through the human thalamus. In this study, they detail their strategy to efficiently sample the thalamus.
Role of the endonasal endoscopic approach in intraorbital tumor surgery: insights from a single-center experience
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) in the surgical management of intraorbital tumors and analyze the adjunctive role of the transorbital approach (TOA) and extended modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM) in addressing anatomically complex tumors.
Minimum cochlear dose impacts hearing after radiosurgery for sporadic vestibular schwannoma
It is uncertain which cochlear dose parameters significantly impact hearing after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for sporadic vestibular schwannoma (VS). The objective of this study was to determine the impact of cochlear dose parameters on hearing outcomes for patients with serviceable hearing (SH).
Characterization of cerebrospinal fluid markers as indicators of spinal cord ischemia following an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair procedure
Spinal cord ischemia (SCI) remains one of the most devastating complications in both open and endovascular stent graft repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. The endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) can be either thoracic (TEVAR) when it targets the thoracic aortic aneurysm or fenestrated branched when repair involves the visceral and/or renal arteries. Even though EVAR interventions are less invasive than open repair, they are still associated with a significant risk of SCI. The current primary strategy to prevent SCI after TEVAR is to increase and/or maintain spinal cord perfusion pressure (blood flow) by increasing the mean arterial pressure while simultaneously draining CSF. Although the benefit of CSF drainage in EVAR procedures remains uncertain, it provides an opportunity to study the changes in cytokine and oxidative stress markers that may signal the pathophysiology of SCI following EVAR. The aim of this study was to evaluate the temporal relationship between stent deployment and CSF cytokine and oxidative stress marker levels as predictors of delayed SCI in patients undergoing an EVAR procedure.
Artificial intelligence as a modality to enhance the readability of neurosurgical literature for patients
In this study the authors assessed the ability of Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT) 3.5 and ChatGPT4 to generate readable and accurate summaries of published neurosurgical literature.
The impact of initial vascular morphology on outcomes in patients with intracranial vertebral artery dissection presenting with isolated headache
The prognosis of isolated headache intracranial vertebral artery dissection (iVAD) without subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) or stroke is unknown. The authors of this study aimed to evaluate isolated headache iVAD prognosis.
The feasibility and clinical outcome of endoscopic transorbital transcavernous approaches with or without petrosectomy for petroclival lesions
Petroclival tumors such as petroclival meningiomas or trigeminal schwannomas extending to the posterior cranial fossa are challenging to treat due to their deep-seated location and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and clinical outcomes of endoscopic transorbital surgery for the resection of central skull base tumors involving the petroclival area.
Predictors of trigeminal neuropathy in patients receiving Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma
The authors' objective was to validate dosimetric and clinical predictors of the development of trigeminal neuropathy (Tn) in patients treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for a diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma (VS).
Development and validation of a predictive scoring model for complications following endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery
The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) has evolved into an established technique in skull base surgery. The authors previously examined 1002 EEA procedures and reported factors associated with postoperative complications. Here they report the development and validation of a scoring model based on risk factors to better predict complications following EEA.
Procedural outcomes of the transradial versus transfemoral approach for diagnostic cerebral angiograms according to BMI: a propensity score-matched analysis
BMI has been shown to affect choice of access site in coronary intervention procedures, with lower complications reported during transradial (TR) access. To the authors' knowledge, the effect of BMI on outcomes in patients undergoing diagnostic cerebral angiography remains undescribed. This study compares outcomes for BMI subgroups based on access site (TR vs transfemoral [TF] access).
